Nestlé Community Programs

    Nestlé Community Programs – 1

Before "ambassador program" was a job title or a line item in a marketing budget, the underlying mechanics already existed — they just didn't have a name yet. Working on Nestlé brands including Coffee-Mate's Brew Crew and Juicy Juice, I was running what would now be called an ambassador program: recruiting people who genuinely liked the product, building a community around them, giving them structure and incentives to share their enthusiasm with their networks, and managing the relationships that made it work.

The work was equal parts online community management and real-world word-of-mouth activation: sampling events, product seeding, network sharing, and genuine feedback loops back to the brand. The rewards were layered to keep people engaged over time rather than for a single activation.

What this taught me, before I had the language for it, was that the most efficient acquisition channel a brand has is often already inside its existing customer base. That insight became the strategic foundation of the QuickBooks Ambassador Program a decade later — and has informed how I think about community-led growth ever since.

    The situation

Nestlé needed word-of-mouth and community engagement for consumer brands before ambassador programs existed as a formal marketing category. The mechanics had to be invented from first principles — recruitment, incentive structure, community management, and real-world activation without a playbook.

    The thinking

I built early ambassador communities around genuine product enthusiasm rather than paid promotion — the Coffee-Mate Brew Crew and the Juicy Juice program. I recruited and activated bloggers who lived on coupon and savings sites, where readers were already hunting for a reason to try something new, and I ran in-person tasting events where ambassadors met the product themselves before recommending it. I layered incentives for sustained engagement rather than one-time activation.

    Results

Ambassador communities built for Coffee-Mate Brew Crew and Juicy Juice. Coupon- and savings-site bloggers recruited and activated, and in-person tasting events run across both programs. Strategic foundation established for community-led growth approach carried forward into QuickBooks Ambassador Program a decade later.
