Platform features succeed when they're built around existing human behavior, not hypothetical ones. The strategic problem for Facebook Camera Effects was the same one Snapchat had failed to solve: how to create filters and effects that felt genuinely local and culturally specific rather than generic — or worse, offensive. I ran a global research project across EMEA, APAC, and North America that identified the cultural moments and regional aesthetics that would make effects feel personally relevant to users in each market, translating into 25,000+ creative briefs that became the foundational content infrastructure for what would become Facebook Stories.

Messenger Camera

Facebook needed to compete with Snapchat's geofilters and AR camera features at platform scale — across every market, culture, and context simultaneously. The failure mode was well-established: filters designed from a Western, English-language perspective that landed as culturally tone-deaf or irrelevant in markets with completely different visual languages, calendar systems, and cultural reference points. Getting this wrong at two billion users doesn't produce a niche problem. It produces a global one.
The research architecture had to work differently than standard market research. Creative briefs couldn't be written from headquarters — they had to be written from inside each market's cultural logic. I built a research and brief-writing system that scaled across hundreds of markets in APAC and EMEA, covering destinations, local events, regional identity markers, and cultural moments that an outsider wouldn't know to look for and an algorithm wouldn't know how to weight.

The system required identifying not just what a moment was but what it meant — to whom, in which context, with which history behind it. A national holiday in one country is a politically contested date in another. A visual aesthetic that reads as celebration in one culture reads differently in another. That judgment applied at scale is editorial work — distinct from both content moderation and marketing. The output fed directly into the Camera Effects Platform, the Messenger localized filter library, and the Cultural Moments product at the top of the newsfeed.

25,000+ creative briefs produced across EMEA, APAC, and North America. Content infrastructure became the foundation for Facebook Stories. Methodology applied across Facebook's global cultural programming. Work spanned Camera Effects Platform, Messenger Camera, and Cultural Moments simultaneously.
